John Coltrane History Tour

Celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month with the John Coltrane Hometown History Tour, a special event presented by Yalik's African American Art & Cultural Movement (YAAACM). This immersive experience explores the High Point roots of a jazz legend and is paired with the 3rd Annual Trane Tracks Jazz Concert on Sunday, April 26, 2026.

Narrated by historian Phyllis Bridges, this bus tour traverses the historic streets of High Point to explore the first 17 years of John Coltrane's life. Guests will visit significant landmarks that shaped the musician's early years.

Key Landmarks:

  • Boyhood Home (118 Underhill St) The house built by Coltrane's grandfather, Rev. W.W. Blair, where John lived from 1928 to 1943.

  • John Coltrane Mural: A massive tribute by artist Brian Lewis located at 1301 N. Main Street.

  • William Penn High School: Now Penn-Griffin School for the Arts, where Coltrane began his musical journey and was voted "most musical."
